Businesses completely rely on email and their website for communications. Websites also provide the online public “face” for their business, and yet, over 80% of them have no control over their domain name, email systems or website and hosting.
Don’t let your business become a victim
Take control of your domain, email and websites in 2015. Businesses come to us for help when their email has gone down and when we ask “who controls your domain, DNS and email” we usually get the answer of “Oh, we’re not sure” or “I think the web designer does it”.
This happened recently when a new client called after their email stopped working and then their website went down. Their business was at a standstill. It turned out that their domain name had not been renewed. “I think our web designer does it” was the response. We contacted the web designer and whilst he updated the website he didn’t control the domain name.
Eventually we tracked down who controlled it but they were on holiday for a week! So the business had to wait another week before their business was operational. They lost business, money and reputation because they were not in control.
“Who you gonna call?”
If your website crashes or goes wrong, where is the backup?
Who can restore it?
If your email stops working, who can help?
If you can answer those questions you can relax in the knowledge that if disaster does strike, you’re safe.
If not, you need to find out now.
Your CMS is not magic!
If you’re using WordPress, Joomla or another content management system, you need to know who’s looking after it, keeping it secure, up to date and backed up. It doesn’t do it by itself and installing one innocent looking plug-in could take down a site. Never run a CMS without having an expert maintain it regularly. They are not ‘set and forget’ so if you don’t maintain them they’ll eventually crash or get hacked. Make sure your designer can do this for you, and if they can’t, find one who can. Always work with experts.
Think of your domain name as the keys to your business. If you lose the keys you don’t have access to your business. How long could you run without your email and website?
Overwhelmed? Get a professional I.T. company to do it for you
A decent I.T. company will help track down who is in control of your website, domain and email, and keep that information safe and at your disposal. What’s more, they’ll regularly review your systems to ensure you have the best quality email, DNS and hosting available.
